Family of Richard Smith and Anna Clark
|
|
Most of these photographs were found among the effects of Alan E W Smith
1904–2000 after his death;
his stepson John Townshend kindly scanned them for me when I discovered
that Alan was my biological father.
The remaining photographs have been kindly provided by other relatives.

Richard Smith 1830–1891
|
|
married 1866
|
|
Anna Clark 1842–1918
|
|
|
I do not have any casual photographs of Richard and Anna, only the
formal portraits below.
The older portrait of Richard was used also in this
obituary
(pdf: rotate clockwise! See also
this note).
The second picture of Anna is labelled on the back
"Mother Taken about 12 months before her death", which dates it to 1917;
I don't know the dates of the other pictures.
|
|
|
|
Richard and Anna had twelve children, but three of them died the same year
they were born: Malcolm Oscar Smith in 1872, Mabel Annie Smith in 1875,
and Harold Smith in 1879.
The remaining nine, eight boys and a girl, are shown with their parents
in the following montage.
Unfortunately, there is no indication which is which.
With the numbering indicated, 8 is the one girl,
Hilda Emily Smith 1880, and 6 is rather similar to a photo that is
labelled Wilfred Smith born 1871.
I would welcome help with any of the others.
(Note that this numbering is NOT the same as the chronological numbering
used below.
There are more unidentified photographs at the end.)

Richard Edwin Smith 1866–1957

married 1914
|
|
May Katherine Quinn born c1888
|
|
|
The first photograph below is labelled "Richard Smith in uniform
after return from first voyage 1883" (see these
reminiscences of Richard).
The second photograph is labelled "Richard Edwin Smith aged 75 in USA",
and the third is derived from the second.
Richard emigrated to the USA in 1888 (according to the 1920 US Federal Census).
According to family records he married Katherine Quinn and had two
children, Thornton born 1914 and Eloise 1915–2010.
(The US Federal Censuses give different names for his wife, but on marriage
and in 1940 she is given as May K, which I assume is May Katherine.)

Ernest Alfred Smith 1868–1949
|
|
married 1896
|
|
Jessie Blunt 1866–1943
|
|
|
Ernest and Jessie had five children:
Gwendoline Hilda Smith 1897–1908,
Ena Rosalind Elizabeth Smith 1901–1992,
Oswald Richard Smith 1902–1993,
Alan Ernest William Smith 1904–2000, and
Jessie Dorothy Smith 1906–2000.
Alan was the only one who married (late in life, with no children),
and it was assumed that the line had ended, until I discovered in 2015
that Alan was my biological father.
(The line will end with me, as I have no children.)
There is an obituary of Ernest
here.

Oswald Edgar Smith 1869–1910

married 1899
|
|
Louisa Elizabeth Tapscott 1874–1964
|
|
|
Oswald's brothers Ernest and Alan have left
reminiscences of his life (pdf).
He and Louisa had two children: (Oswald) Harold Tapscott Smith born 1901,
and (Henry) Richard Tapscott Smith 1905–1978;
both dropped their first name early on, certainly before they married.
They were both born in England but married in Ontario, Canada
in September 1925, in York and London respectively.
Harold then moved to Pennsylvania, where his mother eventually joined him.
The only photograph I have of any of them is of Richard at the wedding of
his uncle Leonard in May 1925 (see below).
